Do i have to rake my lawn before i overseed?

i know you have to cut your lawn short before you overseed. but do i have to dethatch or rake my whole lawn before i overseed? i have a big lawn and it will take forever to rake or dethatch using a dethatch rake. i know you can rent a dethatch machine, but i dont feel like wasting $80 just for a 4 hour period.
