Would it be ok to use box hair dye?

So I have blonde hair(fake) I went brown in January but went back mostly blonde in March, My hair is grown out where it desperately needs to be done but I dont want to pay the money to get it done. Would it be ok to dye my blonde( not platinum just sandy blonde) hair, brown with box dye? Will it hold and cover the blonde? What is the best brand to use? Any suggestions please!!!
